Teco (an abbreviation of TErra COta and pronounced "TEA-KO") art pottery was originally produced from 1899 through the 1920's by the American Terra Cotta and Ceramics Company, Terra Cotta, Il. Founded by William D. Gates after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. There were about 500 different Teca shapes, whose forms are categorized as Architectural, Organic, or Classical. Gates himself designed about half the shapes, with other pieces created by notable designers. Wright was known to use Teco pottery in many of his homes.
